Abandoning any perspective of historical progress, two Argentine novels, La ingratitud (1990) by Matilde Sánchez and Cuaderno de Pripyat (2012) by Carlos Ríos, position ruin as both an aesthetical and political category in order to configure temporalities in suspense and devastated territories that, nevertheless, still hold an indeterminate potential of life. The climate of crisis and catastrophe that these fictions unfold does not translate itself into a definitive closure of history, but instead serves as condition for an incipient production of the common oriented to the invention of associations between bodies, languages and collective modes of life. In the face of the collapse of modern utopias of progress, prosperity and abundance, these novels work with the debris that remains to interrogate the heterogeneous temporal layers and the possibilities of life offered by an expansive and ambiguous present.
