I n mid 20th century, a law proposal appeared in Argentiina, a facsimile of the famous North American Hays Code, with the aim of censoring and proscribing those fi lms considered at the time as “immoral”, or contrary to the Argentinian idiosyncrasy. Unlike its American counterpart, this project did not prosper as a law, but its guidelines were used to measure production and creation of local cinema and were used, at least in our opinion, as a tool to intimidate creators regarding topics they should avoid in their creations The subject of this article is analyzing the proscription and prohibition of fi lms in our reference period (from the first Argentine film (1914), until the fall of the first Peronist government (1955)), from the perspective of the known as Código Siri, comparing and contrasting it with the Motion Picture Production Code.
