We are dealing, in this paper, with the mimetic intent which can be seen in the oral treatment of lexical imports from prestigious languages (especially from English) in the dialectal area of Buenos Aires Spanish, in Argentina. Taking into account the indirect nature of language contact involved, the relationship between oral and written configurations for lexical imported items has a central role. On the basis of data obtained by participant observation and by the application of experimental tests, in the implementation of that mimetic intent we emphasize the role of punctual graphemic-phonological correspondences, different from those typical to the recipient language but subjected to a general phonic substitution by approximation. The result of their extended use is a simplified imitation, functional as to show (some) knowledge about donor languages as to maintain the phonological inventory of the recipient linguistic variety.
