This work is framed within a larger project that investigates on the Generic (GCs) and Specific competencies (SCs) that foster the development of the research ability in scientific studies. These GCs and SCs were outlined by the Tuning Project for Latin America. This presentation draws its attention on one of these GCs: the Ability to communicate in a second language (ACSL). Two were the objectives formulated for this first part: i) to determine the importance of the development of the ACSL in English during scientific studies, and ii) to analyze the place that English occupies within the curriculum of these studies. To accomplish the first objective, two surveys were carried out: one to the faculty of the Instituto de Ciencias Básicas (ICB), and another one to researchers in Basic Sciences. In order to accomplish the second objective, a documental analysis of the curriculum of scientific studies in national universities was performed. Results show that the development of the ACSL in English is of great importance for the training of scientists. However, English occupies a subsided place within the academic programs in basic sciences. In this work, we discuss about this apparent contradiction.
