In the following article, we propose an empirical approach to understanding the representation of complex social processes, based on an investigation of their emotional dimension, particularly fear. This objective will be addressed in a universe of workers in the fish processing industry in the city of Mar del Plata, whose social living conditions have been severely affected by policies that have stimulated monopolistic concentration (Allen 2010), foreign capital (Gómez Lende, 2019), precariousness, and job instability (Mateo et al 2010; Schulze 2020). In this regard, we ask ourselves: what is the diversity of objects and situations that this group of workers fears and/or considers threatening? What are the social personifications considered threatening? We interviewed nineteen workers during the years 2022 and 2023. Among the main conclusions, we can argue that this group of workers mostly express fears and threatening identities linked to situations of theft and insecurity, while other events and processes that threaten their social living conditions remain unobserved. We believe that in a context of growing class inequality in today's Argentine society, the empirical study of fears raises several questions regarding the preconditions of workers to face the growing threats to their chances of survival and social reproduction.
