The connection between international liquidity conditions, debt growth and economic crisis in peripherical countries has brought attention from both economic and historiographic literature from decades ago. By using a new dataset of Argentinean government primary debt issuances, this paper studies the early financial integration from 1820 to 1890. In the same spirit of historiographic literature, the empirical evidence allows to identify two periods of financial integration and high debt. The first goes from 1820 to 1828 under Rivadavia’s goverment witch holds the first foreign debt issuance in Argentinean history, a high capital flight and the first debt default. Then, with the consolidation of the “agro-export model”, a second cycle of financial integration and debt begins. There, two balance of payment crisis can be recognized, in 1873 and 1890, the later has been more severe, combining a currency, banking and default crisis. This shows how Argentina from very early has actively participate in debt and financial flows markets, and that each cycle is not independent of the international monetary regime and with its expansion tends to reinforce specialization patterns in land comparative advantages.
