This article analyzes the problem of alienation framed within a theory of social reclassifications. To do so, first, it reconstructs the recent discussions on alienation formulated by Hartmut Rosa on “acceleration” and “lack of resonance” and by Rahel Jaeggi on a “relation of relationlessness”. Second, it proposes an abstract definition of alienation as the production and maintenance of sharp cleavages, which deny or relativize their relational character. Such definition includes alienation as a dimension of oppressive reclassifications, those which generate or reinforce relations of domination. Third, it connects alienation with the two other dimensions of oppressive reclassifications: violence and standardization. It also highlights how sociological reclassifications impinge on these alienating cleavages and suggests their possible reflexive collaboration with interconnected emancipatory-oriented reclassifications that confront, contest and seek to reverse these oppressive alienating processes.
