The issue of the relationship between business and power in regional elites has generated intense debates in recent years. In the mid-nineteenth century, those who managed the livestock, farming, manufacturing and trading activity of the economy in Tucumán were also the ones that had political hegemony. Business and power are examined through Federico Helguera, whose role in provincial politics during the seventies and eighties made him a key figure in the relations between central and local power during the formation of the national political system. His network of relations played a strategic role in business diversification and in pacifying inner elitist conflicts within the province.
