The objective of this work is to analyze the transformations in reading habits of books and newspapers in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, based on survey data from 1994, 2022, and 2024. Through a quantitative and comparative approach, we propose interpretations and reflections on how technological, socioeconomic, and political changes reconfigure cultural consumption practices. From a theoretical-methodological strategy aligned with cultural studies on reading practices, our interpretive approach brings together available data from the field of editorial production, the Ministry of Education, SInCA, previous research to compare the results of a survey conducted in a recent collective research project. The findings reveal a sustained decline in the consumption of written media, a migration toward digital formats in certain segments, and persistent inequalities according to gender, age, and socioeconomic level. In the current context of the advance of the libertarian right in Argentina aimed at dismantling cultural policies and state intervention in promoting the editorial industry and reading promotion, we propose the hypothesis of a "privatization of reading" that threatens cultural democratization and citizen formation.
