According to data from the 2013 National Survey of Risk Factors (ENFR), young people between the ages of 18 and 24 have the highest prevalence of alcohol consumption, showing that risky consumption patterns do not affect all segments of the population in the same way. the population despite facing the same market and the same regulations. The availability of internationally comparable data and detailed information on the phenomenon to be prevented is crucial for the design of public policies. This work aims to carry out a preliminary descriptive analysis on alcohol consumption in the student population of the National University of Cuyo and the National University of Córdoba. The data comes from the Consumer Habits Survey carried out in August 2019 (Obs.= 1397). The general descriptive statistics show information on consumption habits, propensity and access to alcohol and other substances, the influence of the behavior of peers and family members regarding the consumption of alcohol and other substances, the risk they perceive due to their own consumption of alcohol and the consumption of people around them, in addition to socioeconomic and demographic indicators. We estimated a probit model for the monthly prevalence of alcohol consumption, within the framework of the theory of rational addiction. We identified variables that are associated with alcohol consumption: consuming alcohol in a social and cooperative context, combined consumption of alcohol with other substances, and tobacco consumption. The age of onset of consumption is not important for alcohol consumption in men, while there is a significant inverse relationship among women. Women are more likely to drink when their peers do so frequently; alcohol consumption among men is less likely when they have a family member who gets drunk frequently; the greater the perceived risk of individual consumption, the greater the probability of consuming alcohol, and the greater the perceived risk of other people’s consumption of alcohol, the lower the probability of drinking. A higher level of father’s education is associated with a higher probability of consuming alcohol. These relationships are not causal; however, they represent an important advance in terms of understanding the problem of alcohol in young Argentine university students. The results found are useful to set the guidelines to deepen the development of explanatory models, this being the task that follows after having presented these preliminary results, with the final objective of identifying crucial aspects for the elaboration of specific public policies.
