La vida dormida approaches the family and professional life of political leader Juan Gabriel Labaké based on footage shot by his wife Haydée Alberto and his granddaughter Natalia Labaké, who directed the film. The story includes images that span the decades between the 90s and the present, building an audiovisual mosaic that summarizes thirty years of family life. At the same time, it builds a historical perspective on socio-political developments in Argentina in the last three decades. The shape of a family structure as well as its links with the sociopolitical scene in which it is set (that is, the Menem decade) are approached in this paper from a narratological perspective, i.e., taking into account the modes of construction of the staging. Relations between the personal and the political are analyzed within the framework of gender studies, where the private and the public, the individual and the collective are inseparable. At the same time, the potential of cinema when it comes to representing and constructing personal history and social history becomes apparent.
