This article analyses the political conditions that allowed for the staging of Lanuza, a Spanish play, in August 6th 1851, in the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, province of Jujuy, Argentina. The representation of the tragedy was a political instrument used by the leading sector of this province to support the pronouncement of the governor of Entre Rios, Justo José de Urquiza against the Buenos Aires governor, Juan Manuel de Rosas, in May 1st. This performance is considered to have increased the climate of political unrest. With the support of the government of Salta, Jujuy federalists were able to depose the governor of Jujuy, José López Villar, by accusing him of wearing the "mask of federalism". In view of this, this paper provides insight into the behavior of the political actors in Jujuy and the dynamics of interprovincial relations in northern part of the Argentinian Confederation by the end of Rosas’ regime. The article is divided into two parts: the first of which looks at the comings and goings of politics that enabled spaces of power for the leaders who were involved in the staging of the play; whereas the second explores the details of said representation.
