This paper analyzes the relationship between literature and power in Ov. Fasti, V.545-98, episode in which the poet narrates the aetiology of the temple of Mars Ultor. The emergence of this worship space, described with military language and imagery, is linked with two victories that Octavius/Augustus appropriates to establish and consolidate his government. However, this passage seems to separate wars and give access to elegy. We intend to show that Ovid takes the building of the temple and gives it a new meaning, in order to convey the coexistence of epic and elegiac subject matter.
