About 6000 people speak the Ayoreo language in Bolivia and Paraguay. Along with Chamacoco, it integrates the zamucoan language family. The language shows no evidence of morphosyntactic devices for Tense and Aspect marking. Time reference is then established by inferential means regarding the communicative situation, the semantics of the verbs, and the use of a rich paradigm of temporal adverbs. However, the analysis of narratives collected in the field showcases a new strategy in which an adjective modifies a noun and provides spatial information, which is interpreted as a temporal marker. These constructions seem to match the concept of nominal tense but, in its turn, they conflict with some of the main characterizations of the phenomenon nowadays. This paper aims to systematize the strategies Ayoreo showcases for temporary indexing of propositions, with particular emphasis on the name + adjective construction and its theoretical implications.
