The literature argues that religious beliefs provide a frame of reference and influence environmental thinking and behavior, and that their inclusion in environmental education strategies can improve them. Although there are examples of research that address the link between behavior and environmental education for communities of believers, they are not entirely effective, mainly due to three causes: being adaptations of secular educational programs; focusing on specific environmental behaviors; and considering isolated religious elements in their design. The objective of this research is to identify and integrate the antecedents that predispose to behavioral change, considering the specific religious characteristics of a group of believers for the design of Environmental Education programs. This research updates Hitzhusen model (2006) —based on the theoretical framework of environmental behavior of Hungerford and Volk (1990)— with recent empirical evidence, both qualitative and quantitative. This study builds on the work by Del Rey and Martínez de Anguita (2011), which collected information through focus groups conducted with a sample of Catholic believers from various vicarages of the Archdiocese of Madrid. Additionally, it incorporates the quantitative empirical results obtained from a representative sample of the Spanish population, as reported in Orellano and Chuvieco (2021) and Orellano (2022). The integration of this evidence intends to provide a theoretical basis that considers the specific religious characteristics of a group of believers and integrates environmental psychology tools in an effective and, above all, meaningful model for the design of Environmental Education strategies for Catholic believers.
