In this context, an adequate programming of the traffic light cycles helps to reduce fuel consumption and improve traffic flow. In this paper we present the use of metaheuristics to solve the problem of the programming of the traffic light cycles in the downtown of Posadas in Misiones, Argentina. For the calculation of the origin-destination matrix of the vehicles, a methodology for its assembly with incomplete data is introduced. An analysis is made of the current situation of the traffic lights in front of the use of metaheuristics obtaining satisfactory results.
