This paper seeks to problematize some of the conceptual tools that are frequently applied to the interpretation of political practices of people living in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. It is also aimed at discussing the notions of territorial inscription (Merklen, 2010) and identity of favelados’ organizations and political action. These concepts understand the territory both as a shared platform for collective action as well as a specific form of connection with state institutions. The conceptualization of this historic interrelation between space and action has turned favela into a category (Machado da Silva, 2002) through which certain specific meanings – and not others- are attributed to certain facts and situations. To people living in favelas, these attributed characteristics and causal explanations become an imposed identity that operates and intermediates different daily experiences.
