In the present essay, we will read Manuel Puig´s The Buenos Aires Affair as an atypical hard-boiled story through its attempt to hide the crime by moving it to the margin of the plot and replacing it with a false crime. Also, we will see that this novel is not a traditional crime fiction story but a “policial observacional”, a text without hierarchy where all the elements seem to have the same importance. Finally, we will study the representation of violence, politics, and power in the novel and the way that private violence, exercised by individuals, is a consequence of institutional violence.
