Abstract

Technification of discursive processes is the name of a phenomenon that is much older than artificial intelligence. On this occasion, I question how one of its current manifestations, the automatic simplification of texts in Spanish, extracts and homogenizes what scientists and businessmen call unstructured data, and Rossi Landi calls common speech. To this end, I analyze the arguments that promote both the ‘plain language’ initiatives and those of its automation, in which traces of linguistic work and the relations of domination objectified therein reappear under the gears of the algorithm. Automatic simplifiers work on the basis of a combination of algorithms or language models that can perform tasks such as segmenting sentences, classifying named entities, calculating the complexity of a word according to its frequency index, resolving anaphora, and inserting definitions. However, before they can be applied, these language models must be trained, and the techniques to do so would not be deployed without the coordinated intervention of agents from different fields of the social space (investors, language normative institutions, annotators, psychologists, linguists, computer experts, etc.), who finance, develop and promote these tools. At the same time, this joint intervention would not meet its objectives without its main material: the immense volume of texts produced by linguistic work, which is organized and structured in centralized and homogenized corpora. Finally, I conclude on the glottopolitical implications of the plain language automation by recognizing the ideological principle of the discourse that promotes it and analyzing the argumentative strategies that seek to legitimize it.
