The Carmina by Q. Horatius Flaccus are characterized not only by their metrical but also their thematic variety, including poems that are moralizing in nature alongside love poems and those that treat political matters. Taking as my focus the moral aspect of the odes, I attempt to answer the following questions: Is it possible to situate the Odes of Horace in the traditional moral discourse of Rome (mos maiorum)? To what extent? In regard to the treatment of moral aspects, what image of Augustus emerges from his verses?
