During the last century conventional breeding has contributed substantially to the genetic improvement of forage crops. In the last 15 years, the use of biotechnological tools has lead to important progress, specially related to quality traits. This article describes the application of different biotechnological tools for the genetic improvement of forage species, like plant tissue culture, somaclonal variation, somatic hybridization and plant transformation. It also deals with the contribution of molecular markers to the selection of complex agronomic traits in forage species and the role of genomics in the identification of useful and interesting genes for forage crops. Problems related to the conventional breeding of these species as well as the importance of biotechnology as a complement of conventional breeding and the perspectives are discussed.
