The aim of this presentation is to analyze the cognitive performance of young people and adults with low literacy. This study involved 30 young people and adults who began learning reading and writing in primary schools for adults and non-formal education centers. The study of cognitive profiles of this sample showed that its performance in a number of tasks that assess phonological memory capacity, phonological awareness, memory and general intelligence is lower than the performance of a group of the same age with higher level of literacy, and is lower compared with the performance of children who are also beginning the learning of reading and writing. Indeed, in the Raven test results obtained they showed a very poor performance in all subjects of the sample - below the 5 percentile. The results are analyzed with contemporary studies that work with this population (Landgraf et al., 2011). The need to address this cognitive work on the design of effective programs of literacy skills is identified.
