This is a study that aims to provide a panoramic understanding of the practice of military enlistment (“enrolamiento”) in Argentina, over a period of approximately one century. Based on military documents from Argentina and Spain, but also from several provinces in the 19th century, as well as nonmilitary publications, it is carried out a reconstruction of the meanings of the word, the networks that made enlistment possible, and the numbers that were handled in the military and warring worlds. Changes are observed in all three dimensions. The word “enrolamiento” became more precise as the second half of the 19th century progresses, while enlistment networks gained in extension but not in stability, and the number of enlistees advanced slowly until the first decade of the 20th century, when minor but systematic adjustments to the mundanity of the practice caused a noticeable jump.
