This paper estimate and discusses the pre-hispanic exploitation of palm trees by hunter-gatherer and horticulturalist groups that inhabited a small microsector of the southern end of South America during the Late Holocene. The study area is located on the terminal portion of the Del Plata Basin, specifically in the Low Paraná wetland. The archaeobotanical remains studied here correspond to carbonized endocarps of Syagrus romanzoffiana (pindó palm tree) recovered in five archaeological deposits, dated between 400 and 2300 C14 years BP. On the basis of this record and other lines of evidence associated (archaeological and ethnographical) we discuss the importance of palm trees as food resource, the possible ways of acquisition, processing and consumption (mainly of their fruits) and its potential anthropic manipulation on the region under study.
