The viceroyalty of Peru registered a situation of economic emancipation between the last two decades of the sixteenth century and the first years of the seventeenth century. The self-sufficiency and growth in the production of surplus cash and goods of the kingdom turned the great merchants of Lima into one of the most powerful groups of the Habsburg empire. One of the most forceful manifestations of the emancipation of Peru was in the foreign trade economy of the kingdom, with the circulation of silver and peruleros agents to China and the Orient. The paper analyzes the case of the ship Nuestra Señora del Rosario in 1591 as a representative example of the leading role played by Lima's mercantile agents in the empire's mercantile economy and early globalization.
