This study analyzes the environmental perceptions and knowledge of the community of Tandil (Buenos Aires) regarding the water quality of urban streams, affected by pollution from urban and industrial activities. Through semi-structured surveys conducted among the general population (Tandil) and in neighborhoods directly affected by the surface course of the Langueyú stream (Neighborhood), knowledge, perceived problems, and citizen participation were evaluated. The sample was constructed using random sampling in Tandil and transects from the stream towards the interior of the neighborhood. The results show that the majority of respondents recognize the pollution of the streams, especially the Langueyú, identified as the most problematic. No direct relationship was found between the perception of the state of the streams and proximity to them, suggesting that it is seen as a city-wide issue. Although the importance of community action is acknowledged, the willingness to participate actively is limited, highlighting the need for environmental awareness and education strategies. Additionally, some respondents consider piping the stream as a solution, although this perception varies depending on the socioeconomic region. The study underscores the importance of integrating community knowledge into environmental management and strengthening education to encourage citizen participation. The lack of non-structural measures limits the sustainable management of water resources. In conclusion, including the community in the planning and implementation of public policies is key to integrated water management in Tandil.
