In this article I offer an analysis of the local norms that govern the use of the territory in peasant communities of Santiago del Estero. I present a case study located in Piruaj Bajo, a community in Copo, a department in the North of the province. Based on interviews and participant observation carried out in 2019, I describe the rules that operate in the shaping the village; the rules that govern the use of the forest, with activities which are organized differently in space, overlapping each other; and the rules referring to the limits of the territory recognized by the inhabitants of neighboring communities as belonging to Piruaj Bajo (albeit disputed by external actors). Using the terminology proposed by Macdonald, I postulate that the rules that govern the use of the territory are inferential and implicit.
