This paper analyzes the material consumption and environmental impact of ready-mix concrete in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires in 2019, using a material flow analysis and a life cycle assessment (LCA). The average composition of concrete was estimated through surveys of ready-mix concrete producers. CO2 equivalent emissions (ECO2eq) and the use of materials and energy were considered as environmental indicators. Impact reduction strategies and their influence on the LCA were also explored. 7.16 Mt of materials were needed to produce 2,604,862 m3 of concrete, of which 99.1 % were raw materials and 0.9 % were secondary raw materials. Approximately 78.6 % of the extracted materials were used to produce aggregates. The use of recycled aggregates contributes mostly to reducing the use of raw materials, while the substitution of Portland cement with supplementary cementitious materials mainly reduces ECO2eq.
