This article aims to highlight a Kierkegaardian concept that has gone almost unnoticed, namely, the idea of “eternal images” –evigt Billede–, present both in Kierkegaard's Works and in his intimate Journals and Papers. We will attempt to analyze it within the context of Kierkegaard's thought as a whole and also in relation to the historical-speculative context from which Kierkegaard draws it, namely, Romanticism, translated in Kierkegaardian terms as the aesthetic stage of existence. Eternal images reveal Kierkegaard as a Romantic poet and, at the same time, an overcomer of Romanticism. By means of the eternal images, this text will attempt to show how Kierkegaard transcends Romantic Bildung through an ethical-religious edification whose eternal imaginary has become an actual singular existence.
