The qualities of the port of Madryn were noticedsince theearly hydrographic explorations in the area in 1833. The conjunction of a good harbor and a fertile valley nearby was the considered factor while settling the Welsh colony in 1865. The plan of linking the port to the valley by a railway existed from the very beginning, although it took more than 20 years to concretize. This was accomplished not by the Welsh settlers but by English capital. Rather than the railway, it was the port of Madryn that opened tocolonization a huge hinterland in north Patagonia.
