Humanism, a relevant current of thought that gained strength during Renaissance, took part in an important change in theoretical-philosophical considerations of intellectuals from different fields. Nevertheless, its expansion was intermittent and unequal. It was not the same in every place, in every time, nor with every thinker. This way, in the reflections there were cases of strongly essentialist ideas that didn’t show a deep change in comparison with medieval considerations, but there were others that manifested a vehement effort to go beyond that model. Thinking about that, this paper pretends to show the distinctive characteristics of the humanism of Baltasar Gracián, a spanish jesuit of the XVII century that worked as litterateur and philosopher. Someone who, in a place that had an important catholic orthodox, knew how to put as a central part of his considerations a complex and acute reflection in appearance profane and secular about how was and needed to be the human been.
