This paper explores the formation of two central elements in Beckett’s work: humor and bilingual writing. A critical reading of two transitional works, Watt and Mercier et Camier, written in English and French, respectively, during the first half of the 1940s, reflects deep transformations in his writing. This highlights how the transition from irony to humor operates. Additionally, it serves to dive into the particular nature of Beckett’s humor on his path toward bilingualism.
