Following the extension of compulsory education in Argentina, a process of democratization of secondary school began. The establishment of this school assigned the responsibility to the State of guaranteeing in material terms the access, permanence and completion of compulsory education. This fact necessarily implied the opening of educational institutions to sectors of the population that, given the characteristics of the level, were excluded. Throughout this work it is argued that in order to identify the way in which the processes of democratization of secondary school operated, it is necessary to take as a dimension of analysis the democratic experience of the subjects who are involved in it, in this particular case, young people. To this end, and with the aim of investigating how compulsory secondary education impacted the reality and everyday life of young people at school, this paper analyses the educational trajectories of young people and their relationship with access to socio-educational policies, as well as investigating the meanings and values attributed to secondary school. These data are the first findings of an ongoing research, a longitudinal panel follow-up study (Miranda and Corica, 2018) that will be analysed through the lens of the grammar of youth (Bendit and Miranda, 2017), an approach that will allow us to investigate both the spaces that contextualise and determine youth experiences in compulsory secondary education, as well as to analyse the forms of action (agency) of these young people on these structures and determinations
