This article analyzes the development of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Argentina and Chile, with emphasis on the institutional and legal dimensions shaping their respective marine conservation policies. It examines the historical evolution of protected areas in both countries, highlighting the legal frameworks underpinning the creation of MPAs and the influence of international commitments. The article also explores bilateral cooperation efforts, particularly cross-border protected area projects and the structural limitations that have hindered their effective implementation. MPAs are shown to function as instruments of sovereign assertion in territorial dispute contexts, especially in the South Atlantic and Antarctica, while also exposing tensions between conservation goals and geopolitical interests. The role of international actors, such as environmental NGOs, in the governance of these spaces is also discussed. The article concludes that, despite the existence of a robust institutional framework, the lack of political will and inter-institutional coordination remains a barrier to effective and sustained binational management.
