Objective: The objective of this study is to present a methodology for quantitatively characterizing household solid waste (HSW) in peripheral municipalities, developed in the province of Misiones, Argentina. Theoretical Framework: The guide was constructed by combining methodologies relevant to the local context, based on the works of Sakurai (1982), Castro (2020), IRAM 29.523:2018, ASTM D5231-92:2015, and OPS/CEPIS/04/IT-634. Together, these sources were adapted to include tools for determining the number of samples, such as zoning stratification and the hierarchical prioritization of alternatives. Method: The research employed an applied methodology through a review of scientific literature, characterization standards, and in situ testing, aiming to determine the composition of household waste in municipalities across Misiones, Argentina. Results and Discussion: The results revealed that it is possible to characterize and quantify household waste in peripheral municipalities using a guide specifically adapted to the infrastructure conditions and resource availability of these jurisdictions. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, demonstrating how the results can be applied to improve solid waste management in peripheral municipalities and extend its application to micro-regional scales. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by linking solid waste management with sustainable development, presenting an applied approach for diagnosing and planning waste management in peripheral municipalities whose local conditions do not allow the direct application of standardized regulations.
