The ability of Sarcocornia perennis and Limonium brasiliense to accumulate and tolerate different levels of copper (1 and 3 mM) was evaluated in a hydroponic culture with and without the addition of an amendment with Undaria pinnatifida compost. In general, the content of photosynthetic pigments, the tolerance index and the content of malondialdehyde acid in the treatments without amendment were more affected by the increase of Cu than the tratments amended. The Cu concentration increased in both species with the increase of Cu in the irrigation solution, especially in the treatments without compost, and was higher in roots than in the aerial structure, showing a low level of Cu translocation. Therefore, we recommend the use of U. pinnatifida amendments in phytoremediation practices that use both species to remediate Cu-contaminated environments.
