In this article, I present part of the results of the Research Project PICT 2006 2464, in which we analysed the conditions under which young people develop their subjectification processes in three Argentinian medium-sized cities (Villa María, Junín y Gualeguaychú). Here I focus on the young people’s practices and meanings displayed around the violence in their socializing spaces. For data collection, we used different qualitative and quantitative social research techniques. For the analysis of the discursive corpus, I followed the general guidelines of Grounded Theory. Different kinds of violence occur in combination and are strongly associated with youth’s subjectification processes. In young people’s socializing spaces, the look acquires great symbolic density, as it becomes, at the same time, one of the main bridges of communication between the self and the other, and a sign of peer approval or disdain. It is essential to generate public policies aimed at addressing the various dimensions of violence through dialogue with young people’s experiences and reflexivity.
