In the book “Legitimation crisis”, Habermas defines a set of critical tendencies typical of advanced capitalist societies. Among these tendencies, the most relevant one describes a potential crisis of legitimation that would develop as an unexpected consequence of the growing state participation in the regulation of the economic system. This fact not only exponentially increases the needs of legitimation, but also disrupts the normative structures that provide legitimating resources. In the context of the unquestionable survival capacity of the capitalist system, the plausibility of this crisis has been neglected or minimized. The purpose of this article is to reconsider this interpretation based on a systematic reconstruction of the main dimensions of Habermas´ argument.
