This paper summarizes the chronological data available for the area comprised by Gallegos and Chico River middle basins within the Pali-Aike Volcanic Field (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina). Here we introduce seven new radiocarbon dates obtained from several archaeological localities of the interfluve. Then we integrate new and previous data and discuss the chronological information regionally available for other portions of the volcanic field (such as south of Chico River and Gallegos middle river basin). Our regional temporal assessment shows that although recent surveys increased significantly the archaeological coverage and the diversity of geological contexts studied in the Gallegos-Chico interfluve, redundant occupations were only verified for Late Holocene times, as it was already recorded in other portions of the volcanic field. Considering the earlier human record from the western portion of the interfluve and the Gallegos and the Chico river middle basin dated by Early Holocene, we propose that this temporal trend depicts the occurrence of changes in human circulation and land use of Pali-Aike volcanic field by the Late Holocene. In the central Gallegos-Chico interfluve those changes lead from a marginal to a more central role of the area in the cultural geography of Southern Patagonia hunter-gatherer populations.
