This paper analyzes the formulations acquired by the "exhaustion thesis" of the industrialization by import substitution model in the 1980s and 1990s in Argentina. This thesis, already present in the economic and sociological debates prior to the 1976 coup d'état, was reworked in the context of the democratic transition and became dominant in the field of historiography and social sciences in general. In spite of the fact that in the last decade it has been an object of a controversial starting from the reinterpretations of the Argentine economic history, there are no investigations that analyze the particular political-intellectual conditions of enunciation and the theoretical and interpretative assumptions of the exhaustion thesis, as it was raised by some important Argentine intellectuals such as Juan Carlos Portantiero, José Nun or Tulio Halperín Donghi.
