An upcoming debate in our field is whether Argentina’s social/cultural anthropologists should adopt a professional code of ethics. This article intends to contribute to creating the terms for this debate, providing an anthropological vision –that is, a theoretically and ethnographically informed view– of the topic. Ethics is hered understood as an aspect of morals which, in turn, are characterized as a cognitive phenomenon and as an analytically differentiable dimension of social life in general. Using these terms, the paper will examine the social conditions framing the production of a code of professional ethics, as well as the conditions and the limits of its efficacy. Finally, we present some arguments in favour of the adoption of a code regulating our professional practices.
