The most frequent discursive genres in Engineering careers, based on the use of models and sequences of instructions and vehicles through formal languages (numerical, formulas, graphics, etc.), differ from the argumentative practices of academic writing, which can turn them into difficulties. The objective of this article is to describe the performance of engineering students in academic writing from their own perspective and that of their teachers. In particular, their achievements and difficulties are elicited from a case study in the careers of mechanical and electronic engineering at an Argentine public university. Data collection is carried out through semi-structured questionnaires applied to students and teachers, as well as interviews to recognized career engineers. The results show difficulties in the academic writing of engineering students, among which the following are highlighted by students and teachers: transforming symbolic to colloquial language, reporting accurately, using specific terminology and arguing clearly.
