This text makes a reading of the book Circus by the Argentine poet Leónidas Lamborghini, a work written during the exile of its author in Mexico, dated in the significant period 1977-1983, and published in Argentina in 1986. The book is placed in the context of Lamborghini's work, but also within a discussion of Argentine culture around imperatives posed for poetry and language in the postdictatorship. It is argued that the work can be read as a summa where ideas and images from more than twenty years of the poet's work are decanted and synthetically presented, and also as an exponent of a poetics of brevity and austerity, which proposes a poetic "Franciscanism" in response to the experience of exile and dictatorship, and opposes luxuries and excesses of language. Finally, some speeches related to its reception in the eighties are evoked, and attention is drawn - nevertheless - to the breadth of the poetic experiences carried out by Lamborghini during his exile, which show the centrality of the notion of "play" in his work, and question his membership in any program or fixed position.
