Resumen

Continuous monitoring of vital signs during general anesthesia is essential for maintaining physiological stability, detecting early signs of complications and optimizing anesthesia management. Multiparameter monitors are typically used for this purpose. However, interpreting information presented on physiologic monitors may be challenging for veterinary students, especially in the operating room where patients are under general anesthesia. This potentially stressful environment can interfere with effective teaching, particularly for inexperienced students (Wetzel et al. 2006). Teaching simulators enable developing practical skills without the use of live patients, resulting in more confident graduates and greater proficiency in these skills (Noyes et al. 2021; Elendu et al. 2024). They also contribute to animal welfare by reducing the reliance on live patients in educational settings (Scalese & Issenberg 2005). Recognizing this, we have developed and launched ‘SimVet’, the first open access vital signs monitoring simulator specifically designed for veterinary education (www.simvetmonitor.com). Although several human vital sign simulators are available for similar purposes, most require a commercial license, and free alternatives often lack essential features, such as alternative waveforms. Conversely, SimVet has been specifically designed by veterinarians for veterinary use, with the goal of being open access (free user registration is required) and fully adaptable for the integration of new features or species-specific settings in the future.
