Following Rizzi‟s hypothesis (1995) on the existence of the FocusP projection on the left periphery of the sentence, we examine how a subgroup of the so-called focalizing adverbs work. As focus operators (Bosque and Gutiérrez-Rexach 2009), their scope extends over the constituent they affect, which bears the feature [+focus]. Focalizing adverbs are grouped as follows: (1) "excluding‟ adverbs, such as solamente, solo, únicamente, which act as operators with negative properties that license terms of this polarity; (2) "including‟ adverbs such as, también, incluso, hasta; (3) "identifying‟ adverbs, exactamente, justo, precisamente; and (4) "particularizing‟ adverbs, such as en particular, específicamente, principalmente. On account of the similarities observed, we propose an analysis of their syntactic behavior on the basis of their quantificational force, deriving as well the values of emphasis, exhaustiveness, and alternativity.
