The article examines the Western Military Section (“Circunscripción Militar del Oeste”) and the overland trade with Chile as two key factors to understand the case of San Juan in the context of the state-building process of the Argentine Confederation (1852-1862), with special attention to the years 1854-1858. We focus on military, political, diplomatic, commercial, jurisdictional and institutional aspects, and on the actions of different actors, within their own prerogatives, networks, and interests. The National Congress and the Confederation official press –El Nacional Argentino– are considered as important places of political expressión. Finally, we emphasize the impact of regional and international dimensions since we consider that the condition of San Juan was defined according to the role this province played in the “Cuyo/ Oeste”, and “Litoral”/Chile relations.
