The work of waste recovering has been present since the beginning of the economic crises that Latin America has gone through since the 1950's. Many people have found the possibility of ensuring their livelihood through the activity of collecting material that is considered recyclable by the industry for its later commercialization. In this work, carried out in the city of Santiago del Estero -in the first Recycling Center of the province, self-managed by urban waste pickers- we inquired about aspects related to the age at which the individuals of CORESA (translated community of waste pickers of Santiago del Estero) started their activities, the type of activity carried out within the organization and other questions related. The objective of this work is to carry out a first characterization of the population of CORESA workers. This community is in the process of becoming a cooperative and is currently made up of more than 300 families of waste pickers, distributed among the city of Santiago del Estero, Forres and Los Morales (towns located to the south and north of the city, respectively). The article deals with the following dimensions: workers, work and subjective experiences. For the analysis of these dimensions, theories related to labor precariousness, informal work of urban waste pickers and cooperative work are developed. Finally, some thoughts related to the work of urban waste pickers in Santiago del Estero are presented.
