The article explores the problem of the literacy skills and writing practices of European migrants settled in the rural area of Santa Fe, Argentina, during the period of the formation of the Argentine national state (1860-1887). Two types of sources are analyzed: on one hand, quantitative data on literacy offered by the Provincial Census of 1887, and on the other, a corpus composed of qualitative sources - letters and petitions to political and religious authorities produced by inhabitants of those communities. The central objective is to cross-reference both sets of data to describe the literacy skills of these migrants, the functions they assigned to writing, and how their literacy practices came into tension with the incipient regulatory frameworks established by a national state in the process of formation.
