Honey bees are of great importance to humanity, not only by providing a wide variety of products derived from the hive but also pollinating ecosystems and increase agricultural production of food importance. Many pathogens can affect the health of the colonies and sometimes cause their collapse; one of the most important agents is Varroa destructor. Moreover, this ectoparasite can act as a mechanical or biological vector for some viruses. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the presence of viruses and the prevalence of the V. destructor mite in honey bee colonies in different seasons. Twenty colonies were sampled four times during a year. The percentage of V. destructor infestation and the presence of viruses in samples of bees and mites were quantified. Except for the Deformed wing virus, a direct association between the presence of the mite and the detected viruses was not found. Colonies with high percentage of mite infestation showed virus detection more frequently.
