This article analyses and contrasts three theoretical proposals and their diagnoses of late modernity, which articulate fundamental theories of contemporaneity: first, Latour’s actor/network theory and the “amodern” ecological crises; second, Boltanski’s sociology of critique and his study of the “new spirit of capitalism”; and, finally, the theory of recognition and its current struggles according to Honneth. This is done from three decisive emergent dimensions: 1) the loss of meaning as an epochal diagnosis of contemporary crises; 2) the processes of justification as the key to understand the constructions that legitimize and transform certain situations and relations, for example, of domination; and 3) norms, either as a specific element of the social, or as an ethical-normative horizon of their proposals.
